Altitude Sickness

Trekking to Mount Kailash involves reaching altitudes of over 5,600 meters, where the air contains significantly less oxygen. For many travelers, this can lead to Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), which may affect anyone regardless of age or fitness level. Awareness and prevention are the keys to staying safe and healthy during the Kailash Yatra.

What is Altitude Sickness?

Altitude sickness occurs when your body fails to acclimatize properly to low oxygen levels at high elevation. Common symptoms include:

  • Headache
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Trouble sleeping

In more serious cases, it can develop into High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) or High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE) both of which are life-threatening and require immediate descent.

Tips for Prevention:

  • Ascend gradually – Allow your body time to adjust
  • Stay hydrated – Drink at least 3-4 liters of water daily
  • Avoid alcohol and smoking – These worsen dehydration and oxygen flow
  • Eat light, high-carb meals
  • Rest well and don’t overexert yourself
  • Take prescribed medication like Diamox if needed
  • Know your limits – Inform your guide immediately if symptoms arise

Our Kailash tour itinerary includes built-in acclimatization days and is designed for gradual elevation gain. Our guides are trained to monitor your condition and respond swiftly to any symptoms.
