Altitude Sickness

Altitude sickness, also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS), is a common challenge faced by travelers trekking to high elevations, such as Mount Kailash or other Himalayan destinations. It occurs when the body fails to adjust to the lower oxygen levels at higher altitudes. Understanding the symptoms, prevention methods, and treatments is essential for a safe and successful journey.

What Causes Altitude Sickness?

As you ascend above 2,500 meters (8,200 feet), the air becomes thinner, which means there is less oxygen available. Your body needs time to acclimatize to this change. Rapid ascent, overexertion, and dehydration can increase the risk of AMS.

  • Nausea or vomiting

  • Fatigue or weakness
  • Difficulty sleeping

When to Seek Help:

If symptoms worsen or do not improve with rest, it may progress to more serious conditions like High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) or High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE), which are medical emergencies. Descending immediately and seeking professional medical care is critical.
